Art Therapy
Art therapy is a mental health service that uses creative processes to support children and young people to express emotions, thoughts, experiences and interests in ways that do not rely only on words.
Sessions are facilitated by a Masters qualified and registered Art Therapist and provide a safe, respectful space, where children can explore what is happening for them at their own pace and in ways that suit their communication style and preferences.
Art Therapy can support:
- Emotional expression and understanding.
- Regulation and self-awareness.
- Communication and social development.
- Confidence and identity.
- Flexibility and problem-solving.
- Fine motor development.
- Processing difficult or overwhelming experiences.
Children do not need to be “good at art” to benefit. The focus is not on producing artwork for display, but on the creative process itself. Art-making can provide helpful distance from difficult feelings, making them easier to explore and understand.
Art therapy can be particularly helpful for children who find traditional talk-based approaches tiring, uncomfortable, or limiting. It offers another way in!
Sessions are adapted to each child’s strengths, interests and goals, and may include drawing, painting, clay, collage, sensory materials, and structured or open-ended creative activities depending on what best supports them.
Art Therapy works alongside other therapies offered at House on the Hill and can be a valuable addition to a child’s overall support plan.
