Music Therapy

At its heart, Music Therapy is the clinical use of music to accomplish individualised, non-musical goals.

It is an evidence-based health profession where a qualified / registered therapist uses music to help children improve their physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs.  Your child does not need any musical ability or talent to benefit from these supports, it’s a great way of engaging in therapy with music as a tool.

How does it work?

Music stimulates more parts of the brain than almost any other human function. Because music is a “whole brain” activity, it can be used to build bridges in the brain where there might be gaps or delays.

Music Therapy interventions include playing musical instruments, singing, listening to music, and/or songwriting, whilst incorporating the preferences, needs, and goals of participants.  Music Therapy sessions encourage communication through music, creating a pressure-free environment for capacity building and is suitable for all ages.

What does a session actually look like?

Music Therapy is not just listening to soothing songs (though that can be part of it), it is often active, loud, and playful.  Depending on your child’s needs, a session might include:

  • Songwriting:  Writing new words to a familiar tune to express feelings they can’t say in conversation.

  • Instrument Play:  Using a variety of instruments including drums, shakers, guitars, keyboards and iPad apps, to work on impulse control (e.g. “play fast,” “stop,” “wait”).

  • Singing:  Using melody and rhythm to improve speech articulation and breath control.

  • Movement to Music:  Dancing or physical activities to improve gross motor skills and balance.

Sessions are typically on an individual basis (45mins face-to-face), but we can also offer Group or Family sessions.

How can Music Therapy help?

Music Therapy is versatile and can assist with presentations such as ASDADHDDepression and Anxiety; here are some areas where families often see progress:

Communication & Speech – singing can help children articulate words, improve the rhythm of their speech, and increase their vocabulary.

Social Skills – music often requires listening, turn-taking, and collaboration, helping build social interaction and positive relationships.

Emotional Regulation – builds emotional connection, literacy and regulation, and develops positive coping strategies and resources.

Physical & Motor Skills – building fine and gross motor function through movement and dance.

Functional Skills – improve educational engagement and outcomes, assist with transitions and daily routines.
